The theater department in Jenison is starting production of “The Play That Goes Wrong”. The Theater Department is a great club to join to make friends and channel your creativity. This year’s play show dates are November 13-17. Some crews start on September 18 and auditions are on the 26th.
Why should people join theater?
Jenison High School has a lot of great sports teams that students can join but there are also several clubs. One club that students should know about is the Jenison Theater Department. Joining theater does not mean you have to be on the stage singing and dancing. There are many backstage jobs and crews that you can join. Some crews you can join our paint, props, set, makeup, and costume crew. It also is a great way to channel your creativity and hone your class.
Jenison Theater department director Ashlee Degraff stated “It is one of the few places where it doesn’t matter what you are involved in we have athletes, we have band kids, we have choir kids, we tech center kids, we have Spanish immersion kids, we have exchange students. It is one of the few places where we truly see a pretty robust representation of our school.” People join theater to learn life skills like leadership. Time management, and how to work are also great qualities you learn when in theater. Many people find theater intimidating and hard to get into when in reality it is pretty easy. “Just tell me you want to join. Its pretty easy. We pretty much let everyone in.” The theater provides great opportunities for its members. This year theirs is there is a thespian festival a Broadway master class, and a trip to Escanaba.
“Theater is welcoming, relaxing, friendly, and safe” were some words used to describe the theater department by Jenison’s Thespian troupe President Bryan Tower.
What theater does for our community
It allows students to learn some amazing life skills and provide entertainment for our community. During show week there are shows only for the retirement homes and the elementary schools. Last year many of the elementary school kids got to participate in the musical “Joesph and the techinicolor dream coat” Instagram pages for the crews and backstage BTS show the process of the show to families and other theater departments. Theater has been very important throughout history. All though our high school theater does not seem very important many people in our community love how amazing our theater department is.
Information on how to sign up
The crew and audition forms were due on the 15th and 18th. “If anyone still wants to know more information or is still interested in joining the theater department you can find more information on Instagram @jenison thespians or @jhsbackstage. The jenison thespians google classroom, or the Thespians board by the guidance office,” stated Ella Dempsey 12th grader Set crew lead and technical director. You can look for more information about this year’s musical Big Fish later this year near April.
