What is the Yearbook Committee?
The yearbook committee is a tradition at many schools, especially Jenison High School. Students come together to edit, photograph, and produce the school’s yearbook.
It happens after school and in class. Students go to football games and events to capture photos to add to the yearbook.
It happens throughout the whole school year to capture as many memories as possible. It is then given to students in the next school year when everything is complete.
Why is it important?
It is important since it brings students together. Not as a tradition for schools, but as a timeline of old memories that brings students together. It is also fun if you’re looking to learn graphic design and teamwork.
Did you know that yearbook committees have been around for years? We asked three people if they knew when the first yearbook committee organized. This is what one said when asked.
“The 1700s?” said Carson McKay, senior at Jenison High School.
He was right! A detail of last yearbook’s Spotify theme was to bring grades together.
Creativity and work
“I really liked it, I think it was something a lot of people think about, and not too niche. Spotify is very popular, so I liked how it was creative and well-known,” stated Maria Storm, senior at Jenison High School.
Not only is it a creative way for kids to learn. It also takes a lot of time and work from staff members and students involved. Which means you can learn more responsibility and life lessons.
“If I’m being honest, the yearbook club is a lot of work, but I really enjoy it. I think it is fun to produce something you keep for a long time. Little did I know how much work it would be, but it was worth it,” stated Laura Zeichman, Advisor for YBC.

Background information
A survey by TheVisionsMSM shows a graph that shows numbers for this. 81.1% of students said that Yearbooks are very important to them, and they keep them to look back on. That is the majority of the people they interviewed. Only 2.2% of people said the yearbooks don’t matter to them, which was 2 people they interviewed. As well as 15 people, making up 16.7%, said it doesn’t matter either way. Through the graphs, you can see how special these books can be.
“I am happy to ease and do much of the grunt work, but I cannot feasibly do it on my own. The reason I’m willing to help is because, as an MSMS graduate, I understand the desire to have a physical artifact that is a tribute to your particular class and your particular experience,” states Mr. Leonard, MSMS Graduate.
