In today´s classroom, seeing students wearing headphones has become much more common. In school, students listen to music, block out noise and distractions from those around them, and more. These students are learning how to use technology to their advantage in education.
In many classrooms today, it is common to see students wearing headphones. Which can make it start to feel like part of the classroom environment and affect how kids learn. While this trend may seem unusual at first. It shows how students have changed over time to focus on their studies.
Students thoughts
Students say they concentrate more when allowed to use headphones in the classroom. ¨I feel more locked in on my work and provide better work for my teachers when I can listen to music¨. Said Brady Marklevitz, Junior at Jenison High School
When working in groups, students feel less distracted by people around them. ¨I feel like I can focus on my assignments and not listen to the conversations going on outside of my area,¨ said Carter Okeefe, Junior at Jenison Senior High School.
It looks like students have better interactions when they can use their headphones. ¨When we can listen to music it feels like the conversations are more focused on our work. And not on what is going on in the background of our classroom,¨ said Jorden Host, Junior at Jenison Senior High School.
Teachers tend to feel ignored when viewing headphones in use. But students can use them to hear the teacher better and more clearly. ¨My headphones have a feature where it lets me hear my teachers better and know what they are saying when I’m not right next to them and they help me focus to only listen to my teacher and not others around in the class,¨ said Brady Marklevitz a Junior at Jenison Senior High School.
Some students also use headphones to help them relax and reduce stress during their work. When they listen to calming music or sounds, it can make them feel more comfortable and ready to learn. This can be especially helpful when students are feeling anxious or overwhelmed. ¨When using headphones I can feel relaxed and not stressed and rush my work so I can give my best in every assignment,¨ said Carter Okeefe, Junior at Jenison Senior High School.
Students report that they enjoy using headphones when they have online work. As class work is more and more online, that will cause more videos to watch with audio. That could cause students to need their own pair of headphones. ¨If teachers could find some way to affect what students listen to in class, that could be a great way to allow students to wear headphones,¨ said Brady Marklevitz.
