The Pressure of Exams
As the end of the semester draws near, students everywhere are preparing for the inevitable challenge—exams. For many, the days before exams are sleepless nights and rising anxiety. Though exams assess what we’ve learned. They often leave students battling stress instead.
Exams are a major part of the academic experience. But for many students, the pressure to do well can become overwhelming. Between late-night studying and constant anxiety. The stress that comes with exams is something students all over the world know too well. This stress not only impacts mental health but also physical health. This raises the concern that traditional testing might not be the best way to test students.
Study Habits: To Prepare or Not to Prepare?
Many students will study late into the night to prepare for their exams. While others aren’t stressed and will wing it. While their grade is important, passing is passing. And as such if they can some won’t study because they could fail the exam and still pass the class.
“Usually I’ll wing the exam unless the teacher gives me a study guide I’ll use it. Or if I know it is going to be hard I’ll do a little bit of studying” said Austin Walendzik, a senior at JHS.
How Stress Affects Performance
Too much stress can hurt a student’s performance. Research, including a study from the University of California, Berkeley. Shows high levels of stress can interfere with cognitive functions like memory. Making it more difficult for students to perform at their best during exams.
“Last year during exams, I was trying to be prepared for all my exams. But my prepping didn’t help me since I started to forget about some things for my other exams” said Shaylie Ohlman, a junior at JHS.
Coping with Exam Stress
Research shows that using positive coping strategies. Like exercise, mindfulness, time management, or leaning on support from friends and family. Can help lessen the negative impact of exam stress.
“My favorite coping strategy has to be hanging out with friends. Since when I’m hanging out with them I don’t have any worries or concerns” said Aiden Butts, a senior at JHS.
Finding Balance: Managing Exam Stress for Better Performance
