Who can? Pep Band!

April 23, 2019

“I think the atmosphere of the pep band is pretty straightforward-people come to play music and have fun.  No one is forced to be there, so everyone tends to have a good time being with each other. It’s more fun when everyone wants to be there!” is what Mr. Justice, the Pep Band conductor, responded when asked about the “general atmosphere” of the Pep Band.

The Pep Band recently concluded all five of their basketball games. But, that doesn’t mean that they’re finished. The Pep Band is a significant component of a basketball game’s atmosphere and will continue again next year.

Why should I care?

Pep Band is a great way to practice your instrument outside of the classroom. It also provides great music to make practicing fun. Practice makes perfect but who says practicing can’t be fun?

“If you want to achieve a goal, you should definitely expect to put time and effort into accomplishing that goal” (Daniel Weemhoff).

Pep Band is not as taxing as a typical band class but still offers all the activities that make a music class fun.

“I like doing pep band because even though we’re working on playing and sounding really good, it’s more casual than being in concert band or marching band” (Mr. Justice).

Is Pep Band worth my time?

The Pep Band experience is a great time and you can hang out with your friends while playing fun music after school during basketball games.

“[When I was in high school,] I joined pep band because I really liked playing my tuba, and I wanted to play some fun music in the winter.  I was also able to hang out with my friends and watch the basketball game” (Mr. Justice).

Daniel Weemhoff said that “Pep [Band] can be enjoyed by anyone who both enjoys basketball games and [or] playing music.”

Pep Band is an overall fun time and allows you to experiment and have fun with your instrument as well. It offers the convenience to try out new techniques or to improve the way you play. In Pep Band, you will most likely find others playing the same instrument as you, who you can learn from to better your playing ability.

“Pep Band has made me realize that playing your instrument can be a lot of fun. Especially when you don’t have to worry about doing something wrong” (Kassidy)

What is the Pep Band?

Pep Band is a group of volunteers from the band who get to together at basketball games to hype up the game. It usually meets after school every other Tuesday from 3-4. During these meetings, students can learn and practice the Pep Band music in a safe environment. No commitment involved. You do not have to go to every game that they play in if you cannot make it or any other reason.

These Pep Band songs range from tunes like “25 or 6 to 4” by Chicago (the fan favorite), “Master of Puppets” by Metallica, or “Paint It Black” by The Rolling Stones.

Pep Band is a fun and great way to practice your instrument with your friends. The Pep Band is also a valuable element of the basketball game atmosphere. Be sure to look for the Pep Band next year.
