Martin Luther King Jr. Day is coming up on Monday, January 15, 2018. He is well known as the guy who marched on Washington later giving the famous “I had a Dream” speech. For others, they know him as the leader, alongside Congressman John Lewis, who led 600 people across the Edmund Pettus bridge to protest African-American rights and the Jim Crow Laws. Why do we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Day? We celebrate Martin Luther King (MLK) day because he changed the course of history by ending racial segregation between white and black people.

Martin Luther King didn’t just lead other black, some white, people across a bridge to protest their rights; with his speeches, he motivated other African-Americans to protest in their towns with “sit-ins”. Sit-ins are when people sit at a restaurant counter or table and sit there but they don’t order anything in protest. Before sit-ins, black people didn’t have the right to eat at some restaurants so they just walked into the restaurants, that didn’t allow them to be there, and sat protesting quietly. After a while, the police would come and beat them until they were either dead or badly wounded.

This act scared most black people in the South and in the North; wanting to kill or fight back against white people or the police. Martin Luther King kept reminding them that violence will only lead to more violence and the suffering will come in the end.

We celebrate MLK day so we remind ourselves as a nation that racial discrimination and discrimination itself is a horrible, terrifying thing and that we should never be that racist ever again.
