The Jenison varsity football team took at David McKenzie Stadium on Friday, September 29th, as they took on Reeths-Puffer. The annual Homecoming game was a rematch of last year’s game at Reeths-Puffer in which the Wildcats pulled away at the end to win 11-8 in the Rockets Homecoming game. Reeths-Puffer entered the game seeking to avenge last year’s tough loss. Dan VanOpstall, a senior lineman on the team, said, “This game was very important to us because it puts a lot of pressure on us to win out if we were to lose this game.”

Jenison got off to a fast start after the defense made a quick stop to force a punt. Junior Kyle Nott would score off of a quarterback keeper on the first offensive play of the game to go 80 yards for the score. The early fireworks would stop there as Reeths-Puffer would score a touchdown and a field goal right before half to make a score of 10-6 in favor of the Rockets.

The Rockets scoring was done for as the tenacious Jenison defense held the visitors to zero points in the 2nd half. The Wildcats were not done scoring though. Running Back Benny Dieterle would score in the 3rd quarter, followed by a strong run by Junior Ray Russo in the 4th quarter to finish off the Rockets, 20-10.

The Jenison victory marked the 4th win of the season, and the Wildcats look to carry on the momentum next week Friday as they travel to Fruitport High School to take on the Trojans in a conference battle. “We have some good competition coming up, but we will be ready to go,” said Chris Gadbois, a senior cornerback and wide receiver.
