TikTok ban in the US
March 20, 2023
Who does this effect?
This affects the entire country of the United States. The U.S. and Canada’s governments have already banned TikTok from their devices, as a precaution. But as a country as a whole. It would be interesting to see how everyone reacts to the ban and what they would do in their free time. I know that in my own free time I’m always on TikTok passing time. I know that a lot of other people are too. “A TikTok ban would “limit Americans’ political discussion, artistic expression, free exchange of ideas and even prevent people from posting cute animal videos and memes,” the ACLU said in a letter to lawmakers,” said Mr.David Shepardson writer and author at REUTERS.
As Shepardson said, “the ACLU wrote in a letter to lawmakers. Banning tik tok would limit the use and the purpose of the first amendment. Which is freedom of speech, press, petition, assembly, and religion. TikTok is an app that lets them do all that. Taking it away would take away the people’s right to the first amendment.”
What will it do to social media if TikTok goes away?
TikTok, now one of the most popular apps in the U.S. today. With more than 100 million active users every month. Who are younger generations, from early twenties to six year olds, are consumed by TikTok. Instead of going on Youtube, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram. They are going onto TikTok, and either watching them or making them themselves. If TikTok were to get banned from all electronic devices in the US. The other major apps would get all that attention back. That they lost because of TikTok.
Where will it get banned?
Right now the big situation is here in the US. Where the government has already banned TikTok from their own devices. Along with Canada’s government doing the same thing. Following in our footsteps. Also the EU. Also known as the European Union. Has also banned TikTok from their government devices as well. For cyber security reasons.
When will this happen?
It all started in 2022. First, the discussion between the US government about what they think. also how they feel about the whole TikTok app. The app’s owner, ByteDance. Has admitted that within the last days of 2022. Some of the employees had improperly accessed some of the US citizens information. As an act of investigation into leaks to journalism. But now in 2023. It is still ongoing about what the US government is gonna do. About the ban of the TikTok app in the current year for the country.
But will keep the ban of TikTok from the devices of the US government. In the article by Mrs.Sara Morrison, senior reporter at Vox. It states, “It looks like 2023 will finally be the year when we find out if ByteDance can convince an increasingly hostile audience that TikTok isn’t a national security threat or what happens to TikTok if it can’t.” According to Morrison. In the upcoming year we will find out if TikTok is staying or going. Based on if they make the deal with CFIUS with the “project texas” case.
Why is the US thinking about banning TikTok?
The short answer is for the safety of the US nation. The main situation is that TikTok is a chinese owned app. The big concern from the US government. Is that the information given by the users to create an account. Will be given or accessed by the chinese government. But there are some obstacles if the US government wants to ban TikTok. It interferes with the first amendment right, freedom of speech. If TikTok were to get banned it takes away our right to freedom of speech. As Mr.Max Zahn reporter and publisher at abc news said. “TikTok, which has more than 100 million monthly active users in the U.S., has faced growing scrutiny from government officials over fears that user data could fall into the possession of the Chinese government and the app could ultimately be weaponized by China to spread misinformation.”
From what I’ve heard over the news and gossip. TikTok getting banned. Would be because of the information getting to the Chinese government. And according to Zahn. The personal information that is on TikTok given by us. Could find its way to the Chinese government, for them to use. Those are the reasons why the U.S. government is discussing banning tik tok from the U.S.
How will they make this happen?
They will have to accommodate for the amendment implication. Also the possibility of starting a conflict between the US and China. But if it comes down to banning TikTok from the US as a whole. Then there will be a law or bill passed, banning TikTok from all US devices and any US networks. It will not be on any app stores anywhere in the US anymore.
